LOUISVILLE — Sovereignty won the 151st Kentucky Derby on Saturday in the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. Ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott, Sovereignty won the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs.

The victory earned trainer Bill Mott his second Kentucky Derby victory, the first in which his horse crossed the finish line first. He had previously won in 2019 with Country House, but that was via disqualification.
