Texas Gov. Greg Abbott insisted Monday that he would accept nothing less than a robust, universal school choice voucher program, and he resisted calls to join the plan with blanket increases in public school funding.

Gov. Greg Abbott touted Texas’ strong economy in his State of the State address Sunday, where he also laid out a list of priorities he wants Texas lawmakers to focus on in the months ahead. These include creating a school voucher-like program and lowering Texans’ property taxes.

The Texas governor is making school vouchers, teacher pay raises, and career training priorities this legislative session. This week, the Texas Senate will likely pass SB2 – the school voucher bill. There's also a plan in the Senate to allocate $5 billion to public schools for teacher pay raises.
