FTC v. Meta live: the latest from the battle over Instagram and WhatsApp
The long-awaited antitrust trial between Meta and the Federal Trade Commission kicked off on April 14th. Over about two months, DC District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg is hearing arguments about whether then-Facebook illegally monopolized the market for “personal social networking services” through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.
Meta appears to be blocking Apple Intelligence on its iOS apps including Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp in favor of its own Meta AI.
A key piece of Meta's defense is that the social media landscape has changed vastly since it bought Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, and even since the FTC brought the case 5 years ago.
Another argument is that consumers aren't actually worse off, that Instagram and WhatsApp would not have been what they are today without Meta's help ... science to design. The breakthroughs ...
The trial will be the first big test of President Trump's Federal Trade Commission's ability to challenge Big Tech.
