James Gunn's most recent comments on the DCU's canon are the perfect explanation for what is and what isn't part of the universe. To avoid confusion, he should let the matter die there.

According to Bloody-Disgusting, the late Return of the Living Dead actors James Karen and Don Calfa will appear in Linnea Quigley’s meta-sequel, Trash’s Revenge, “with the magic of CGI.” In response to a fan on Threads (via Screen Rant ), James Gunn confirmed he’s now “pre-writing” his next DCU project after Superman and Peacemaker season two.

There you have it. While he was really hustling while directing Superman, it sounds like he's able to successfully write while balancing other responsibilities as the head of the studio. Of course, now I jut want to know what writing project he's in the process of pre-writing.
