WASHINGTON — The Trump administration said Tuesday that it is pulling almost all U.S. Agency for International Development workers off the job and out of the field worldwide, moving to all but end a six-decade mission to shore up American security by fighting starvation, funding education and working to end epidemics.

The Trump administration is recalling USAID staff from overseas, placing most on leave as part of a broader foreign aid freeze. The move effectively dismantles the agency's global presence and has sparked backlash from diplomatic and humanitarian groups.

The order all but shut down the six-decade mission of the US Agency for International Development, the federal government's primary agency for delivering humanitarian aid to other countries.
