The Labour party’s biggest affiliate trade union, Unite, has suspended Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, as a dispute over a strike gripping the city of Birmingham deepens.

Unite the Union has suspended Angela Rayner’s membership over the Birmingham bin strike, as it accused the government of failing workers in a row that could lead to a historic split with the Labour Party.

Delegates from the Unite have "overwhelmingly" voted to suspend Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner's membership amid the trade union re-examining its relationship with the Labour Party. The decision comes after an emergency motion at Unite's policy conference in Brighton where it condemned Birmingham's Labour council and the Labour Government
