The Trump administration on Thursday sued New York City over local laws that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, saying the statutes unlawfully thwart immigration arrests and conflict with federal immigration law.

In a lawsuit filed in Brooklyn on Thursday, federal prosecutors accused the city and several of its officials of seeking “to obstruct federal law enforcement” in violation of the constitution’s Supremacy Clause, which holds that the constitution and federal laws generally prevail over conflicting state laws.

The Justice Department on Thursday filed a lawsuit against New York City and the city’s leaders for impeding the Trump administration’s immigration actions.
