Amid the blitzkrieg of executive actions President Donald Trump has taken over the past two weeks, it should be no surprise that the administration aims to exploit and expand what is perhaps the 21 st century’s greatest symbol of lawlessness: Guantánamo. In so doing, he is carrying forward the shameful history paved by his predecessors.

Around 150 tents to house migrant detainees and to support detention operations have been set up at the U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay, according to satellite images taken over the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. President Trump has ordered his administration to prepare to house as many as 30,000 migrants at the base.

Migrants have previously been held in a lower-security part of the base. Tents are also being constructed near the detention facility.
