Aiming to appease President Trump, Mexico is hitting China with tariffs, handing cartel leaders over to the United States and using C.I.A. intelligence to hunt down others.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she hopes to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump now that he has announced plans to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada starting Tuesday.
Starting just past midnight, imports from Canada and Mexico are now to be taxed at 25%, with Canadian energy products subject to 10% import duties.
Before the tariffs went into effect, approval ratings for President Claudia Sheinbaum rose and companies began marketing “Made in Mexico” products.
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that Mexico will respond to 25% tariffs imposed by the United States with its own retaliatory tariffs on US goods.
President Trump's sweeping tariffs threatened to upend free trade in North America and sent shock waves through the global supply chain.
"There will not be submission," President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday, adding she hopes to speak to Trump this week. "Mexicans are valiant and strong."
