El Cajon-based Savage Pet Food is recalling boxes of raw chicken food that possibly contain the “ highly pathogenic” H5N1, also known as the bird flu virus. The company on March 15 said it was pulling 66 large chicken boxes (84 ounces each) and 74 small chicken boxes (21 ounces each) with the lot code/best by date of 11152026.

Pet owners are urged to return the recalled items and contact their veterinarian if their cat is exhibiting symptoms of the bird flu.

Savage Pet, based in El Cajon, California, announced it is recalling large and small boxes of its chicken cat food because it could possibly contain H5N1, also known as bird flu. The company is recalling 66 Large (84 oz.) Chicken Boxes and 74 Small (21 oz.) Chicken Boxes, according to a release from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
