AUSTIN, Texas — A new poll shows there's support in Texas to legalize casinos and loosen marijuana restrictions. More than 1,000 Texans were surveyed by the University of Houston recently and found nearly 80% of people supported expanding medical marijuana. Legalizing and decriminalizing recreational use also received bipartisan support.

But most Texans think it’s time for a change. A survey released today by the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston found that 62% of surveyed Texans want to legalize recreational marijuana use, and almost three quarters said the same about gambling.

The industry has boomed in recent years after hemp was legalized in 2019, but lawmakers have done little in the way of regulations. Cannabis products that produce a high can easily be accessed on the shelves of gas stations, vape shops and specialty stores across the state.

A new poll of voters shows that most Texans are ready for significant changes to the state's marijuana laws, including decriminalization and legalizing recreational use. The survey showed that only 22% of Texans want current marijuana laws to remain in place.
