A wildfire in the hills near the U.S.-Mexico border exploded early Friday morning over thousands of acres, prompting evacuation orders throughout the Otay Wilderness Area and triggering school closures as well as likely power shutoffs for tens of thousands of people.

A new prescribed burn, called Drd Piles Wcsl, was initiated today at 7:51 a.m. in San Diego County. The prescribed fire has been burning on federal land managed by the United States Forest Service. Currently, no information is available regarding the land area burned or the size of the crew conducting the prescribed fire.

The blazes ignited in San Diego County early Tuesday, keeping Southern California on edge as dangerous fire conditions persisted.

Still prohibited from returning to their homes due to the conflagration, dubbed the Border 2 Fire, were residents of areas east and south of Otay Lakes Road.
