Memphis coach Penny Hardaway announced the hiring of assistant coaches Nolan Smith and Mike Davis on Wednesday, just two weeks after parting with four staff members on the eve of his seventh season. Smith and Davis are high-profile hires and will be latest on a carousel of assistants who've worked under Hardaway since he took the Memphis job in 2018.

The university shared an anonymous letter alleging Hardaway’s personal involvement in recruiting players and academic violations with the NCAA.

Memphis athletic director Ed Scott said Friday that he "absolutely, unequivocally" expects Penny Hardaway to be the school's men's basketball coach for the 2024-25 season. Scott's remarks come at the conclusion of a tumultuous week for the program that included a staff purge and the university's acknowledgement of an anonymous letter that alleges multiple potential NCAA violations.
