The California Highway Patrol will continue surge operations for another month to combat crime in Oakland and other Bay Area locations, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday morning while urging a change to a controversial police policy.

Newsom also announced he would extend the California Highway Patrol's increased presence in Oakland to help address vehicle and retail thefts as well as violent crime. He deployed 120 officers in February and quadrupled the number of troops in July. In recent months, he expanded CHP's presence in Vallejo as well.
