A teenager is charged with murder after a Newark, New Jersey police officer was shot and killed. A second officer is hospitalized.

One Garden State police officer was fatally shot and another wounded in a furious gun battle with at least one suspect in Newark on Friday night, according to sources and news reports. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said that two Garden State police officers were shot Friday night.

A Newark police officer was killed in the line of duty Friday night in a shooting that also wounded a second officer, according to police union officials. The officers were shot at 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret Street in Newark, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
