Reports of abuse at a South Louisiana ICE Processing Center led to questions regarding detention center conditions. What to know about ICE centers.

In a piece published Saturday in The Guardian, Southern bureau chief Oliver Laughland covered immigration court hearings at LaSalle, putting the facility within the context of many ICE centers located across the Southeast known as “Detention Alley.”

The ICE facilities where Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil and Georgetown University fellow Badar Khan Suri are held have a history of reported abuse and inhumane conditions, experts say.

In a post Saturday on X, the Seattle office for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that Alvaro Flores-Barboza, 24, had been arrested and is currently detained by local authorities in Oregon. ICE reported that the man is from Venezuela and escaped from the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma on March 26.

The Tacoma Police Department was notified Wednesday night that someone in custody at the Northwest ICE Processing Center had escaped.

Sgt. John Correa with Tacoma police said in a phone call that South Sound 911 received a call from the facility Wednesday at about 7:30 p.m. reporting that someone in custody had escaped. He said officers responded to assist in conducting an area check, but no one was located.
