Two girlfriends and I are planning a day canoeing the Niobrara May 23. We will be staying overnight in Valentine. Please advise on the best/prettiest section of the river. We plan on about 6 hours of canoeing. Any recommendations for where to rent a canoe or kayak in Valentine? We will need a shuttle. Any additional information to make the trip enjoyable is appreciated. Thanks!

The best part of the river is from Cornell bridge to Smith Falls State Park. It is more scenic. There is not a sign to Cornell Bridge, so we drove way out of the way. So if you see a sign points to Fort Niobrara National Wildlife refuge, turn right there. There are launching fees -- not much. Both put in and take out at these places are public. I would call the Niobrara National Scenic River in Valentine and ask them. They are very informative. They gave us a long list of outfitters -- whom we didn't use - cause we had our own canoes. 402.376.1901. If you like a quiet river --you might want to avoid Memorial Day weekend. We had the river to ourselves but understand it can get quite crowded in the summer. The river is very fast so it is really 3-4 hours of canoeing -- with lots of side trips to look at falls.
