Does anyone have recommendations to complete the "Encumeada" hike? 1. I see posts that say you start in Pico Ruivo and journey to Encumeada from there but that seems too long a day. 2. Another post says to start from Boca da Corrida ... which would be preferred so I can drive in, hike, and drive out. Please help, thank you!

Hi, To be able to do the walks you mentioned where is the best place to stay on Medeira. Thanks Ruth
A:
Funchal is the best place to do all of them, but depending on whether your walk is on the west or east of the island, the companies can be quite flexible in picking you up en route.

Funchal is fine for doing levada walks, stayed there myself. There are a few easy levada walks that you can reach by bus (and also come back by bus afterwards). For almost all other levada walks the start is somewhere high up in the mountains and a taxi / tour is your best option. Car rental is of course also possible, but many levada walks don't end at the same place they start, so you have to walk back along the same route as well. I found a tour to be the best option. Its fun to have someone who knows the area to talk along the route and guide you. The routes themselves are often easy to find and walk, provided that you are able to find the beginning, since they are sometimes not clearly marked. You can walk ALL routes without a guide, there is a good Android app to get more information, made by students living on the island, search for "walkme levada". This app also shows starting coordinates of each levada walk, works like a charm in combination with for instance OsmAnd navigation (free offline maps).
